Why Colossians was written:
The church at Colossae was under attack from false teachers who were insulting the deity of Jesus; they were teaching that He was not actually God. Paul addressed these issues head-on.

Today we examine the new self and how to be fruitful by putting on the clothes of our new life.
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
The Case for Us (2:6-14)

When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature.

You were buried with Christ when you were baptized.

You were raised to new life because you trusted the power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

You were dead because of your sins because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ - he forgave all our sins.

He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
New Clothes (3:12-13)
Put these on (this is a choice made by turning from self to others)

The focus of the old self is internal the focus of the new you is others.
These are fruits of the Spirit…what is growing out of your life from the Spirit of God. The purpose is to sustain and nurture those around us.

Compassion (sympathy, empathy, the benefit of the doubt)
Kindness (kind-hearted)
Humility (humbleness, modesty)
Meekness (gentleness)
Patience (endurance, persistence, stamina)
Forgiveness (mercy, understanding)

Above All (3:14-15)
put on:
Love
Peace (harmony, unity)
Thankfulness (gratitude, appreciation, gratefulness)
How do I apply this?

God gives second chances
o Remember who you are and who’s you are
Don’t live in defeat, Walk in grace
o Clothe yourself in it
Be an ambassador for Christ

Power Text: (3:17)
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Final thoughts:

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.

Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives.

Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Each day is a new day and new opportunity to walk in the fullness of Christ.

Maybe yesterday didn’t go as well as planned or you suffered a great loss or defeat, remember, His mercies are new every day. Lamentations 3:19-24
