Why Colossians was written:
The church at Colossae was under attack from false teachers who were insulting the deity of Jesus; they were teaching that He was not actually God. Paul addressed these issues head-on.

Today we examine the false teachers and the devices they use
A Pastor's Heart (2:1-5)
4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.

Delude – Believing something that is not true.

Remember: Diluted truth is not truth.

Worldly Ways (2:8)
Devices of false teachers
· Philosophy
· Empty deceit
· Human tradition
· Spiritual powers of the world
Religious Ritual (2:16-19)
Judgement
Attempts to disqualify

People missed the point of the law, celebrations, and even the Sabbath.
These were only shadows of what to come... Christ

We need to purge our lives of things that take us away from God and not draw us to Him.

But don't miss the point: efforts to please God do not measure a man’s righteousness…we have none.

It is only through the regenerative power of Jesus that we are bestowed His righteousness.

It is always easier to see the sin in another person’s life than to acknowledge the sin in our own.

Be careful not to judge others because they sin differently than you.

Legalistic Limits (2:20-23)
Empty value

Legalism – using rules and commandments as a way of salvation.

I heard a clip from a preacher just this week make the claim:
“If you’re not changed, you’re not saved.”

I need to fix that for him… “If you’re not being changed, you’re not saved.”
2 Corinthians 3:18, 2 Corinthians 4:16
Romans 12:2
Philippians 1:6
Philippians 3:13 Paul said… “I have not yet attained but this one thing I do…forgetting those things which are behind me and reaching for those things ahead. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Anyone who believes themselves to have attained total transformation needs only to stub their toe in the middle of the night to experience a reemergence of the old self.
How do I apply this?

Examine your habits, heart, hope

Habits – what do you do that does not bring glory to God? Pray that God renew your mind and transform your life.

Heart – What are your motivations…your why behind decisions you make?

Hope- Is your hope in man and man’s ways or is your hope rooted in Jesus?

Power Text: (2:20)
NLT 20You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world…
Final thoughts:
See to it that you hold fast to the teachings and commandments of Jesus. Jesus only is all that you need.

Pray that you will be rooted and built up in Him and be established in the faith.
